Are termites a problem in Indiana?

Yes, termites are a major problem in Indiana. Since termite damage is typically not covered under homeowner's insurance, it's vitally important to learn more about what you can do to prevent termites from damaging your Indiana home or business.

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites pose the greatest threat to Indiana homeowners and live in colonies underground.  These colonies can become quite large, ranging into well over one million termites, but most colonies in the Midwest don't get quite that large, only upwards of 100,000 termites.

Diet

Termites feast around the clock on wood, typically wood with a high moisture content (although some rare species of termite prefer dry wood).

Termites need wood or cellulose to eat and contact with the soil for moisture.  Being a soft-bodied insect, they need a continual moisture source to keep from drying out.  Ideally, wood in contact with the soil is prime for termite development.

Termite Damage

Termites can wreak havoc on your homes foundation. According to the National Pest Management Association, termites alone cause over $5 billion in property damage annually within the US.

Many times all that will be seen indicating an infestation is the presence of shelter tubes or dead termites around windows, doors and heating vents.

Damaged Wood

Moisture-damaged wood, especially that which feels soft to the touch, is a good sign that termites might be present. Typically, there won't be damage on the surface so further probing and inspection will be necessary.

Flying Swarmers

Another way to identify if there's a termite colony near your home is by discovering swarmers (flying termites). These reproductive members take flight in large groups during the summer to look for new places to settle the colony. Occasionally, you might be able to spot their cast-off wings left on the floor around doors or windowsills.
